Louis Icart Pastel Lithographs

Hand Colored Pastel Lithographs from Dessins de Femmes

Louis icart – French (1888 – 1950)
In 1928, Icart created a portfolio of hand colored pastel lithographs as part of the series of works titled “Dessins de Femmes.” These works were not marketed in the US as were his etchings, but were distributed mainly in Europe. The signature is in the stone as is what appears to be the charcoal drawing. However, the hand coloring is unique to each work and is done in pastel. The coloring of these works is much better than found in the etchings, and the fact that these have a clearly different appearance than the etchings and have a limited distribution in the US makes them desirable. The size of the sheet is about 13 1/4 x 17 1/4″ and the paper is a cream wove. Note, that major auction houses often call these works charcoal and pastel drawings.”
