Background

Salvador Domingo Felipe Jacinto Dalí i Domènech, born 1904 in Spain, made significant contributions to the Surrealist movement. The Surrealists praised what Dalí named his paranoiac-critical method of tapping into the subconscious for a higher level of artistic creativity. Dali also created original works, with many of them having religious themes. These originals then served as the foundation for his etchings and lithographs. He traveled to Paris and the United States, always with his wife Gala by his side, who not only managed his work but also inspired many of it. Despite not having a keen interest in lithography as a medium, he recognized its financial benefits. Dali passed away in 1989.

Salvador Dalí, probably the most widely recognized member of the Surrealist movement of the early twentieth century, was heavily influenced by Sigmund Freud. The avant-garde style delved into consciousness and dream-like states through exaggerated landscapes and strange or grotesque imagery. Dalí applied a meticulous hand and inventive wit to explore these ideas through various mediums like painting, sculpture, printmaking, film, and literature.

Although known for his role in Surrealism, Dalí was also a seminal example of celebrity showmanship and the cult of personality, a phenomenon that dominates popular culture today. Always a colorful and flamboyant presence with his signature cape, wide-eyed expression and trademark upturned waxed mustache, Dalí was a master of self-promotion and spectacle.
