Salvador Dali Don Quichotte , 1964

The Salvador Dali Don Quichotte etching was done in 1964.  Graphic Art Consultants was the publisher. The total tirage is 150 plus proofs. This etching is on Rives.  It is printed in black.  Salvador Dali signed the etching.  The tirage number is 44/125.  The sheet size is 15 1/2 x 11 1/2″.    It is in fine condition.

Note, that there have been sales of this etching with an edition of 45.  Field provides information of an edition published in 1975 by Levine and Levine in brown.  Dali signed 200 of these.  However, there is no mention of an edition in black.

Don Quichotte is a character in Miguel de Cervantes novel titled Don Quixote.  Don Quichotte is a favorite subject of Dali.  The subject appears in many etchings.  This is the first version of the image as an etching.  Other versions of the etching appear in 1968 and 1971.  Lithographic versions appear in 1957 and 1972.

Dalí was known for his role in Surrealism. He was also a seminal example of celebrity showmanship. Subsequently the cult of personality is a phenomenon that dominates popular culture today. Dali was always a colorful and flamboyant presence. This is reflected by his signature cape, wide-eyed expression and trademark upturned waxed mustache. Dalí was a master of self-promotion and spectacle.

This is the tirage for Salvador Dali Don Quichotte

The tirage is 150 plus proofs.  This is a small edition for Dali.  There were 125 (1/125 – 125/125) on Rives in black.  There were 25 (I/XXV – XXV/XXV) on Japon in black.  Proofs were printed on both papers.  Note, in 1975, Levine and Levine published another version of the etching.  This version is on Arches and is in brown.  Dali viewed the plates and perhaps signed a numbered edition of 200.  However, there are a lot of EAs.  Dali did not sign these.  These are not  authentic.
