Salvador Dali Poemes de Mao-tse-toung – 1967

The Dali Poemes de Mao-tse-toung is an illustrated book.  It was published in 1967.  Text is translated into French.  We have the portfolio with complete text.  It also contains 8 engravings and an extra set of engravings in black and white. The text and engravings are enclosed in a black cloth folding box.  Editions Argillet, Paris and Graphik Europa Ansalt published the book.  The set is in excellent condition. The image size is 24 x 18.8 cm. The pages have full margins and they are loose as issued with a size of 38 x 28.2 cm. This is one of 229 copies published with text. Each of the etchings has an embossed signature.  Dali signed the colophon.

Dalí was known for his role in Surrealism. He was also a seminal example of celebrity showmanship and the cult of personality, a phenomenon that dominates popular culture today. Dali was always a colorful and flamboyant presence. This is reflected by his signature cape, wide-eyed expression and trademark upturned waxed mustache, Dalí was a master of self-promotion and spectacle.

This is the tirage for the Dali Poemes de Mao-tse-toung book.

The total tirage is 324.  The first three books were printed on parchment.  They contain and original watercolor.  They also have a plate used for printing and three extra suites.  The color of the suites are black, sanguine, and color.  The next five books (4 – 8) contain one original drawing.  They also have three additional suite.  The suites are printed in black, sanguine and color.  The next twenty books ( 9 – 28) are printed on Japon nacre paper.  They contain two suites.  One is in black and one is in color.  The next forty nine books (29 – 78) are printed on Arches.  They contain one extra suite in black.  The “regular” edition of the book has 150 copies (79 – 229).  This edition is printed on Arches blanc.  Finally, there are 95 copies printed on Japon.  These contain no text.

The publisher owns the plates.  The portfolio as a lithograph of Chinese writing with the translation “Le Defile de Leouchan / La Longue Marche.”
